1st Trimester

Your pregnancy as a HIV positive mother is as normal as any other pregnancy

you should take care to

  • Take your HIV medicine as your healthcare provider prescribed
  • Taking HIV medicine reduces the amount of HIV in your body (your viral load) to a very low level, called viral suppression. If your viral load is so low that a standard lab test can’t detect it, this is called having an undetectable viral load. Taking HIV medicine and keeping an undetectable viral load is the best thing you can do to stay healthy and prevent transmission to your baby.
  • Visit your healthcare professional on every appointment for regular monitoring throughout your pregnancy and to check your general health and your baby’s.
  • Eat well and hydrate. It is essential for an HIV positive mother to maintain a healthy diet both for her health and her baby’s.
